My four-year-old can’t quite tie her shoes yet (ok, disclaimer, neither can my almost-seven-year-old). To make life easier, she wears Velcro shoes. Velcro is genius, right? That is until I want to throw the shoes out the window because they have lost their sticking ability and she constantly walks around like this:
I refuse to throw out a perfectly good pair of shoes that still fit just because the Velcro has worn out. Here are a couple of tricks I learned that actually work to put the stickiness back in!
1. Find a use for those free toothbrushes you get at the dentist but never use because you use your Sonicare instead. Rub the toothbrush bristles against the harsh side of the Velcro. This is to remove the debris that is likely stuck. Sometimes this step works and you’re back to working Velcro!
If it’s still not sticking:
2. Take a safety pin or tweezers to clear debris from the fuzzy side of the Velcro. If needed, gently trim some of it but be cautious to do so evenly and light handed.
Still not sticking?
3. Take a lighter and turn the flame on about an inch from the fuzzy side of the Velcro. Move it back and forth until you see some of the fibers starting to curl. You may need to do some light trimming.
If these tips fail, you could try buying Velcro at a craft store and sticking/sewing that on…but that would be the point at which I would throw the shoes out the window and buy a new pair.
Good luck!
