Let me get straight to it- the Easter Bunny creeps me out. For as long as I can remember, I have not been a fan of the idea of sitting on the lap of some giant rabbit. It’s always confused me. Do I tell this bunny what I want for Christmas? For Easter? What exactly is the point of visiting the Easter Bunny?
As a parent, I have never convinced my kids that some life size Peter Rabbit comes into our house to leave candy. We very much focus on the true meaning of Easter in our house. Maybe with a side of some Easter candy and egg hunts.
But I am kind of a hypocrite.
I am totally down with good ol’ Saint Nick. Flying reindeer, Elf on the Shelf, the North Pole-yes- I have told my kids all of this magic is for real. I am sure to many, the idea of sitting on Santa’s lap is just as creepy as taking a sit on the Easter Bunny. Or perhaps just as magical.
My kids have point blank asked me about the Easter Bunny. I didn’t even blink an eye before going right into telling them that a bunny doesn’t actually come into our house. Mom and dad leave out Easter baskets and hide Easter eggs. A part of me cringes that this will tip them off about Santa. But so far, they understand that the Easter Bunny is just a fun idea but that Santa is the real deal.
I laugh writing this, knowing I am setting myself up for some challenging conversations in the not-so-distant future.
It is a question every parent will likely grapple with at some point. Tune out the judgment and suggestions of others and focus on what works for your family. Blogger Julie wrote on this topic and reminds us that God will guide us.
Moms, are you down with the Easter Bunny? Do you find all seasonal characters to be kind of creepy? Or do you love the magic that it brings to our little ones? We’d love to hear!
This quick video could be a cute project to do with your little ones to start discussions around the Easter story. It’s a heavy one but I like starting them off in small doses like this video shows.
Happy Easter!
