Sometime during the preschool years, the birthday invitations start rolling in. I love how much my son enjoys going to parties. I love watching him with his friends, I love watching him play and have fun, and I love using it as an opportunity to teach him about giving.
It’s fun shopping for a new toy for a friend, but I get sticker shock every time when it comes to the wrapping. Cards run around $3 apiece, and gift bags are close to $5.
Ridiculous? Yes. Especially for a 4-year-old whose primary concern is whatever is inside it!
So I came up with a cheaper, more personal alternative that’s also a fun craft project for my little one.
I call that a win-win-win.
Instead of buying store-bought cards and wrapping paper, I have my son make his own. He has a great time, takes a lot of pride and care in creating something special for his friend, and –BONUS!– he’s entertained for awhile.
Luckily, I gave up scrapbooking years ago and have random paper and stickers stashed around the house. But even if you don’t, just use whatever you have. Newspaper, construction paper, tissue paper, and brown grocery bags make great wrapping paper. Decorate them with stickers, stencils, stamps, ribbons, or good old-fashioned crayons.
Just remember:
It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It’s meant to be fun.
Preschoolers aren’t picky.
Let go of perfection, save a few bucks, and let your kiddo go to town!
