I am a haphazard gardener at best.
I love the neat, orderly rows I see in gardening magazines, but I can’t seem to replicate them. Instead, I end up with a pile of seeds in one spot and nothing next to it.
The first time I used seed tape, I was thrilled. Finally, the perfect rows I had dreamed of, but here’s the thing, seed tape costs more. Just buying plain seeds has grown expensive over the years and the seed tape is now out of my price range.
Solution: MAKE YOUR OWN!
With a few household items, you can create your own seed tape. It’s the perfect project to do while you’re waiting for planting season. Plus, it’s a wonderful rainy day project.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Seeds (of course)
Paper towels or newspaper
Flour and water
A bowl and spoon
Scissors and a marking pen
Instructions:
Cut your paper towels or newspaper into strips 1” wide.
Label each strip with the name of the seeds you’re planting. Read the seed packets to find out how to space your seeds. Then, make small dots (spaced appropriately) on your strips.
In a small bowl, mix flour and a few drops of water to make a thick paste. Dip your finger in the flour mixture and dab some “glue” on each of your marked dots. Press a seed in each drop of glue.
Let dry.
And, that’s it! Once dry, you can roll up your strips and store them until all signs of frost have passed.
When it’s time to plant, simply unroll them and plant your seed tape in the garden. The paper will biodegrade, and your plants will grow in lovely, uniform rows.
Note: you can also cut your paper into circles to fit your pots and make “seed circles” with a multitude of different seeds to fill your pots!
“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” Luke 8:5-8
