Alright mom, I’m not here to debate whether it’s too soon for pumpkin spice. I’m just here to declare solidarity with all my people who really don’t even care.
I haven’t even cared enough to TRY it. That’s right, I’m in the .02% of the population who has never had a Pumpkin Spice Latte.
I’ve never even been tempted. I’m solidly a vanilla latte kind of girl (light on the syrup, please) and the idea of springing for a $5 beverage that I may not even like isn’t the least bit appealing.
And the whole “pumpkin” thing? Do you remember that big uproar a few years ago when people went crazy because Food Babe did an exposé on the fact that there isn’t REAL PUMPKIN in the Pumpkin Spice Lattes? I watched that whole thing go down in amusement because 1) I’d never expect there to be real pumpkin in my COFFEE for crying out loud, and 2) The term “pumpkin spice” doesn’t tell me that something should taste like pumpkin. In my mind it implies using the SPICES that are typically associated with pumpkin like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. If they wanted to say it tastes like pumpkin, it should be called “pumpkin AND spice.”
Simple grammar, people.
But then that got me curious – do pumpkin spice lattes actually taste like pumpkin? Or just the spices? A Google search didn’t help me at all, but either way it doesn’t really matter. I’m not a huge fan of those fall spices to begin with, so I’m pretty confident I wouldn’t like it whether it had pumpkin flavor or not.
So there you have it. My confession. Despite the craziness surrounding the popular beverage, I’ve never had a Pumpkin Spice Latte.
But I’m still pretty sure I don’t like them.
How about you?
UPDATE: After battling with my son over dinner and insisting “You can’t say you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it,” I realized I was being a hypocrite and decided to try my first PSL on Facebook Live. Here’s how it went.
