Who doesn’t love the story of Jesus feeding the multitude? (Read it at Matthew 14:13-21). I don’t know if it’s the fact that so many people gathered together to listen to Jesus speak or the fact that food was involved (wink, wink), but I never grow tired of hearing about this miracle.
It occurred to me today that moms are miraculous feeders in another way.
I remember the lean years when I had no money for groceries. No matter what, I always managed to whip something up for dinner with only what was hiding in the cupboard. It might have been fried eggs on toast or some pancakes, but everyone left the table with food in their tummies.
My mother-in-law was famous for feeding her family of six on one pound of hamburger. She had a whole collection of recipes: stroganoff, meatballs, meatloaf, hamburger gravy, etc. She had gone through her own lean times and she knew how to make do with only a little.
My own mother loved to gather people together. Even though she had no extra money, she always managed to feed a crowd on a dime.
My fellow blogger, Kristina, and I love to create meals out of “nothing”. Kristina often makes “freezer meals” out of whatever is hiding in her freezer. You would never guess her gourmet meals came from the leftover things she found.
I still hunt in my fridge and pantry to make meals out of odds and ends. My husband will joke, “Enjoy it, kids, because you’ll never eat this again!” And, he’s right. It’s hard to replicate a dish that was created by throwing the fridge remnants together!
I’m sure you have your own stories to add, because moms are amazing. They may not possess the power of making dinner appear without moving a muscle, but they do have the power to make dinner out of “nothing” and that is a beautiful thing.
