I’m not a Bible scholar by any stretch of the imagination. I admire those who look up root words and their meanings, memorize long passages and study the history of the times, but I am just not wired that way. I am drawn more to the backstories of people’s actions. How did they feel when they faced enemies all around them? What caused them to sin? Why did some choose to remain faithful and others choose to turn to other gods?
I am especially drawn to the women in the Bible, not only the “big names” but the women who performed deeds, welcomed strangers and fed disciples without a lot of fanfare.
I made a new discovery the other day. I was reading in 2 Kings. As I read the kings’ stories down through the generations, a pattern emerged. Whenever a king was named who had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord, his mother’s name was always listed.
These moms may not have books of the Bible named in their honor and they may only be mentioned in a sentence or two, but the mothers of Godly kings were important enough that they were documented in the holy book for all eternity.
So, the next time you are wiping a nose, refereeing a fight, or calming a child in the middle of the night, know that you are worthy of mention. What you do and the faith you share with your children make a difference to the whole world (not to mention, your Father).
Could there be a more noble profession?
