Sometimes, it takes a bit of magic to get the kids outside.
So, why not have them make nature wands while they’re out there?
All you need are:
- Twigs
- Yarn or embroidery thread
- Finds from nature (flowers, seed pods, feathers, leaves, etc.)
Instructions:
Find a flower or leaf to tie on the top of your twig. Leave both ends of your string long.
Once you’ve tied your wand toppers on, hold one piece of your yarn while the other end is flat against the wand. Twist the stick in your hand to twirl the thread or yarn around it.
Keep tucking in foraged bits of nature as you wrap. You can change thread colors by just tying another piece of yarn on.
Tie the ends off and voila! Like magic, you have a wand.
Kids can make their wands as silly or as pretty as they want.
Then, let the fun begin:
Create games to play with your wands. How about freeze tag? Or, they can turn each other into silly animals. Let the kids pretend to make the garden plants grow bigger, or they could sit in a circle and tell stories (the person holding the wand starts off with a few sentences and then passes the wand to the next child and they add to the story, the last person to hold the wand finishes the story).
The ideas are endless and, who knows? The kids just may play outside for longer than usual!
