Here we are again. Not just Christmas season; Elf on the Shelf season. To those who have somehow escaped it, the Elf on the Shelf is basically an Elf that lives at your house during the Christmas season to watch your kid’s behavior during the day. He flies back to the North Pole each night to report that behavior back to Santa. He doesn’t fly back to the same spot in your house each day. No, he prefers to land in a different area he can be sure to monitor the kids from various rooms in the house.
Last year, our Elf was, um, misplaced. We had to get a new Elf. As luck would have it, our original Elf appeared right after Christmas in a box we hadn’t looked in. Yes, that meant we had two of them.
What’s more stressful than one Elf on the Shelf? Two of them! I had a crazy moment on Thanksgiving and thought it would be a fun idea to have both of them with us for this season. Honestly though, my kids were so excited it did make me glad I had a crazy moment. Luckily for us, the Elves are going to stick together and land back in the same spot each evening after their North Pole visit.
I may regret my decision in a matter of days.
The regret would be less if this Elf actually succeeded in improving my kid’s behavior. But honestly I don’t notice anything different. For our household, the purpose of the Elf is pure fun versus some wonderful parenting tool.
These years are so limited of the kids being little and finding magic in something like Elf on the Shelf that I like to really take advantage of it. We weave this kind of magic in with the actual meaning of Christmas.
With plenty of sleeps left until Christmas, there is a long season of Elf movement ahead of me. Times two. I know there are moments soon to come while lying in bed and thinking “oh no the Elf needs to move!” But overall, it brings us laughter and excitement and honestly adds to the magic of the season.
Did your Elf on the Shelf come back this year? Did he/she bring a friend? We’d love to hear!
