For BC family day this year we surprised our children with a trip to FlyOver Canada at Vancouver’s downtown waterfront. FlyOver Canada is an immersive flying journey that connects you with Canada’s beautiful sights and sounds, soaring above the tundra of its territories, sailing into the ocean and connecting with the beautiful country that is Canada.
At one point of our experience, it felt so real that our youngest thought that we were actually hovering over mountains high in the sky with only tiny straps holding us to our seats. He got very frightened as we swayed back and forth, tilting and jousting. He was so frightened that he started to cry in fear. I could totally understand this emotion because even as an adult who knew this experience was not real, my senses were telling me I might fall from the sky.
My husband who was sitting closest to him placed a reassuring arm across our son’s chest holding him firmly and said don’t worry Buddy, I’ve got you! My husband just left his hand there the whole time holding our son back into his seat firmly with his hand and gently reassuring him: “You are fine, you are safe, your dad has got you, I’ve got you,” and I could see him calm down, relax and actually start to enjoy the experience because of that.
What my husband did reminded me of a scripture verse in Genesis 49:24 that says, “and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob.” God is represented as placing His hands on Joseph’s hands and as God stretched His hands upon the hands of Joseph, Joseph’s hands were immediately made strong.
I pray that you will feel God’s hands on your hands making you strong whenever you are going through a scary or trying situation. That whenever you feel you are going to tip over and fall or that the whole world is going to come crashing down, you will feel the arm of God stretching out upon your own and making you strong. I pray that you will hear the assuring voice of God saying, “Do not worry I’ve got you, you will not fall over you are safe.” I pray that once you feel the hand of God holding you, you will calm down and you will enjoy the experience of life, knowing that God is guiding you to safety to the other side.
What is so interesting to me is that at the end of it all, our son said he enjoyed himself and wanted to come back. I want to come back again; this was so much fun he exclaimed. Our son trusts his dad and feels safe around him because experience has shown that he consistently has his best interests in mind and is always there to protect him. So when he felt his big strong arm around him the entire time he felt safe and protected and could enjoy the experience. That is the same way that we as children of God need to rest in God’s arms and know that we are safe and that nothing will actually harm us because of Father God is big and strong. He loves us fiercely and protects us jealously so that we can confidently say like the Psalmist in Psalm 32:7, You are my hiding place. You protect me from trouble, and again in Psalm 20, You hide them in the secret place of Your presence, from the schemes of men You conceal them in Your shelter from accusing tongues.
Isaiah 26:3-4 You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind because he trusts in You trust in the Lord forever because God the Lord is the rocky tunnel.
Proverbs 18:10 – The Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe.
Psalm 91:2 – This I declare about the Lord, He alone is my refuge my place of safety. He is my God and I trust in Him.
Isaiah 41:10 – Do not fear for I am with you do not be afraid for I am your God I will strengthen you I will surely help you I will hold you I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Psalm 28:7 – The Lord is my strength and my shield my heart trusts in Him and I am helped therefore my heart rejoices and I give thanks to Him with my song.
Psalm 73:26 – My flesh and my heart may fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Ephesians 6:10 – Finally be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
