Anyone who has more than one kid knows that their kids are different. It doesn’t take long to figure out that what worked for one kid might not necessarily work for the next. But what if we can guide our kids effectively while still fully embracing their uniqueness?
We’ll be the first to admit that it’s easier said than done. And it’s particularly difficult when you’re dealing with a child who’s on the cusp of adulthood – and is actually independent.

One of the places where the mold is so rigid is the education system – and with education being so important, it’s no wonder parents feel pressure to lean on their kids and help them fit the mold. But the times are changing, with some schools like Seattle Christian School realizing that the way school has been structured in the past is outdated and not effective for the current age.
In fact, they are launching a new schedule this fall for grades 7-12 that “unhinges” the traditional ways of classroom learning, focusing more on uncovering students’ unique gifts and talents. Because God made each person unique – and if they’re going to help them live up to their potential, it’s critical to recognize, honor, and even celebrate that.
In order to prepare students for education after high school, SCS offers rigorous coursework and will be transitioning to a block schedule to provide more depth and opportunities. Students will be able to explore content inside the classroom, and teachers will have the necessary observations and training to ensure a smooth adjustment.
The students will have access to the same AP coursework (History, Literature, Physics, Calculus, and Spanish) and college dual credit courses as before, with the schedule change providing easier management for most students. Plus, STEM course offerings will be enhanced due to a partnership with Project Lead the Way. Students will be able to pursue learning off campus, which many underclassmen have already included in their plans for 11th and 12th grade.
Several have even signed up for internships in the area such as Oak Harbor Freight, Valley View Early Learning Center, the City of Tukwila, and more students than ever have signed up for classes at the Puget Sound Skill Center.
Resources such as an Interim Secondary Principal, Student and Spiritual Life Coordinator, and additions to the Counseling Department have been incorporated to personalize the experience of secondary students. By increasing their services to three counselors, the ability to know students well such as their giftedness, plans, and aspirations has paid great dividends. They have more individual support and guidance as they map out their secondary and post-secondary experiences. Students can think intentionally about their course choices which has brought clarity and support for students and families through the course registration process, which will continue to grow and improve with Naviance*.
SCS sees that every student is uniquely gifted by God for His purpose and His glory. The desire is to help students seek and understand their gifting, and to help prepare them for the paths that God lays out for them.
Every student is different. Every student brings a unique set of gifts, passions, and aspirations to SCS, and their call is to help students pursue those things.
From discipleship groups which provide an opportunity for every student to grow in the context of a comfortable, relationship environment where they have the opportunity to discuss life issues that are relevant to their lives, Biblical worldview integration, service and cross-cultural experiences during InterSCession, students graduate with not only a high school diploma but also with a clear idea of what God is calling to them beyond high school.
