Spring is just around the corner!
What joy it is to see the blue sky after the long winter months. It’s like the world is waking up and I feel like I am waking up as well.
The endless gray days have made me feel lethargic this year and I need some help to wake up and embrace this new season. My solution is to make a Spring Bucket List. I share it with you in case you need to recharge as well.
- Cherish new life. There’s new life all around us! The plants are beginning to bud and the bulbs are poking their heads up through the soil. Take a little nature walk and see how many signs of new life you can find.
- Listen to the birds. I would go a step further and “Feed the Birds”. Their antics at a bird feeder can keep me entertained for hours. Bonus points if you can find a nest in your yard. I’ve found them in the garden shed, in a stored Christmas tree, and underneath our camper.
- Add Flowers. It may be too early to find flowers in your yard, but the stores have a ready supply. There’s nothing like a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the early Spring days.
- Get gardening. Sure, you can’t plant tender seeds and plants yet, but you can dig in the dirt and feel the sun on your back. Go ahead and weed a bit. You can also plant, lettuce, kale, spinach, rhubarb and peas right now.
- Add color. We need color after a long winter! Add a throw pillow, a rug, a bowl of fruit, or anything to bring a bit of brightness inside.
- Fresh air. Even if you’re not outdoorsy (me), joy can be found by simply stepping outside for a few minutes and breathing deeply. You’ll instantly feel destressed.
- Spring smells. While you’re out there, shut your eyes and take in the smells of Spring. How do they differ from winter? Can you smell new grass, freshly dug dirt, warm pavement after a rain?
- Eat or read outside. Take your sandwich outside. Or, dig out the lawn chairs and read for a while. You may need a blanket and a coat, but it will be worth it.
- Search out parks. Do a search for parks in your area. There’s always hidden gems to be found. Scope them out before summer hits.
- After living mostly indoors for the winter months, it’s fitting to declutter a bit. I keep charity boxes in my laundry room at all times. Spring makes me want to start with a clean slate.
- Field guides. Buy or check-out field guides for your area. They have them for birds, plants, animals, etc. It’s fun to look up unusual species you find.
- Walk in the rain. Spring is the perfect time to take a walk in the rain. Use an umbrella or just a raincoat. Enjoy the sounds and smells of a Spring rain.
- Cut a branch. Find a branch with buds on it and bring it inside. Watch it bloom while you’re waiting for the outdoor plants to catch up
- Buy a bucket. Last, but not least on my bucket list, buy yourself a bright new bucket and some gardening gloves. Hardware stores carry pink buckets! My new bucket is obviously mine and no one carries it off anymore. And, new gloves are a gift I give myself every spring. It makes weeding more fun.
So, there you have it, my Spring Bucket List. I hope this helps you embrace the new season too. And, remember:
“For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.” Song of Solomon 2:11-12
