“And the yellow sunflower by the brook,
in autumn beauty stood.”-William Cullen Bryant
I can’t help but feel some excitement for the changing season ahead when I see the sunflowers bloom every August. I know it’s not yet autumn and we still have a few weeks of summer left to enjoy, but to me, sunflowers have always felt like summer’s last hoorah. I’m not the only one who loves them, my kids are usually fascinated by these giants! Between their huge stocks, massive flowers, and tasty seeds, there are a lot of things that make sunflowers fun to grow. Whether they remind you of summer, fall, or a little bit of both, I think we can all appreciate these big, bright, beautiful blooms!

I made this sunflower craft with my five year old son, but toddlers, preschoolers, and grade school kids will absolutely love it, too! Here are a few fun facts about sunflowers:
- Just one sunflower can produce 1,000-2,000 seeds!
- The current world-record for the tallest sunflower is 30 feet and 1 inch!
- Young sunflowers move to face the sun.
What you’ll need to get started:
- Elmer’s glue
- 1 bag of sunflower seeds
- Paper plates (I used the mini, 7-inch plates!)
- Washable paint (I used Crayola)
- Scissors
- Paintbrushes
What to do:
First, choose your paint color! Classic yellow is perfect for sunflowers, but we also used orange and red because one of my favorite varieties to grow are the Autumn Sunrise which grow in beautiful fall shades!
Makes cuts around the paper plate border to make the petals.
Paint your plate!
Once dry, put glue spots wherever you want your sunflower seeds to go. This part is the most fun because kids can create any design they want!
Place one sunflower seed at a time onto the glue spots.
Allow to dry for a few hours. We taped ours to the window but you could always punch a hole, put a string through, and hang them up!
