When was the last time you truly stopped and took in God’s creation?
The other day, if you had come into my backyard, you would have found me barefoot and tromping in the cold, mushy grass as I tried to do just that. I shut my eyes and felt all the different textures on my feet, the squishy mud, the cold temperature and the tickly blades of grass. I felt the wind on my face and smelled the different scents in the air. It hit me how many things God had created to give me just that one little moment.
Life rushes us along and we rarely take the time to truly focus on how truly miraculous God’s creation is.
When was the last time you walked barefoot in the grass, sand or even mud? Did you pay attention to how it feels on your feet? Did you shut your eyes and take in all the textures around you?
How about floating in a body of water and really feeling the water on your body, moving your hands and letting the water flow through your fingers? Or, laying on a grassy hill and allowing the wind to ruffle your hair and clothes.
Some would call what I did “grounding.” Grounding is defined as doing activities that “ground” you to the earth. Doing this is supposed to have positive effects on your body and even help to heal certain diseases, working much like antioxidants do. Studies have shown that grounding reduces the grouping of red blood cells (cardiovascular disease), reduces pain levels, improves mood issues and lifts depression and fatigue.
That’s a whole lot of benefits (although I call it “reconnecting” instead of “grounding”).
You and I already know that whenever we take the time to reconnect with God, good things happen. This is just one way to do that (prayer, worship, and reading the Word also come to mind).
So, as spring is just around the corner, kick off those shoes and squinch your toes in the mud! Open your arms wide and embrace the wind. And, most of all, thank Him for all the uncountable things He created just for you.
