Snow is here! I can’t wait to hunker down with my family, go sledding with the kids, snowshoe around the neighborhood, do puzzles until my eyes are crossed, help my kids make their Valentines cards and boxes, read the book that I finally got from the library after waiting for months, bake to help keep the house toasty warm, and maybe watch a movie or two.
It’s also an opportunity to try something new with the kids – snow treats!
Did you know there are recipes you can make that require snow as a primary ingredient? And since snow of any volume is such a rare occurrence in our area, this is your one chance to try them.
Is It Safe to Eat Snow?
I’ll be honest – I have mixed feelings about this. It sounds so fun. But does it sound gross? Maybe a little. I’m not sure. But from what I’ve read most people agree it’s not harmful {especially since this is a one-and-done fun family project and not a daily activity} and, if I’m being honest, I’m confident my kids are sampling snow anyway when we’re out playing in it.
So I guess anything cringe-worthy about it is worth ignoring if it means my kids are going to enjoy a novel snack.
So choose fresh, clean snow. {Obviously not the yellow stuff.} And if you really want to make sure it’s as clean as possible, maybe set out a big clean bowl overnight to catch the fresh snowfall for you.
Recipes with Snow
Snow Ice Cream: There are lots of variations on this recipe, but this one only has three ingredients. This would be fun {and easy} to try! Tip: If you don’t have sweetened condensed milk, you can make your own with milk, sugar, and butter using this recipe.
Snow Cones: They’re called snow cones for a reason – make an authentic one when the blizzard hits!
Maple Syrup Snow Candy: Heat maple syrup and then drop it in the snow to harden. You can also do this with corn syrup and sugar if you don’t have pure maple syrup, or brown sugar and molasses. Here are some tips on making your snow candy perfect.
Cocoa Snow Slushie: Sweet, chocolatey, creamy, and cold. This looks decadent!
This amount of snow isn’t going to happen every year – so let THIS be the time your kids remember you taking them outside, scooping up a few bowlfuls, and making a treat out of the fluffy white stuff. It will be a snack that they never forget!
