Our children are at that age where they are asking very complicated questions. Some questions I do not even feel qualified to answer. They will randomly ask a question and I feel like I need to do a Bible study first before responding, so I can be sure to answer them according to the word of God and not steer them wrong.
I’m all too aware that what we tell our children as their minds are developing is foundational for them. The last thing I want to do is lead them down the wrong path by my words. For example, our daughter asked if it is wrong to color her hair blue. She is 7. My mind was racing: is it wrong? Is it right? What do I answer? So, I said you know what I’ll discuss it with Dad and then get back to you. Note to self: I have to get back to this little girl.
This reminded me of a scripture, Jesus was speaking to the disciples concerning what they will say when they come before the Synagogue so when we read this verse, we are thinking it only applies in the context of preaching to a crowd of people or at an outreach program. This verse however can be applied to any and every situation when we need divine intervention concerning how we should respond to a question. The verse I am referring to is Luke 12:11-12 don’t worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say. At that time, the Holy Spirit will tell you what you will say.
Which is why it is important to take a pause, ask God for help and listen for what to say, at that time and in that moment.
In case you are wondering, I did get back to our 7-year-old with this reply; there is nothing wrong with blue hair, but there is more to it than that. The Bible teaches us that all things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial. Then I broke it down like this, we don’t do things just because we can, we do things because they add value to our lives and make Jesus proud of us. I asked her to think what value blue hair would add to her life and if she thought it is something that would make Jesus happy if she had it. We talked about how asking these questions is a good practice before we choose to do or not to do something and I trust that a valuable principle was added to her life.
1 Corinthians 10:23 – All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].
Honestly, I’m just so grateful to the Holy Spirit for reminding me of that verse because it was perfect! And this is the very reason why Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit, to be our Helper! Call on the Holy Spirit any and every time! He is after all our ever-present help!
John 14:26 – But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
