My 13-year old officially graduated from wanting to make gingerbread houses this season. I was not heartbroken because I don’t love the process. A wall or door always crumbles down, someone gets frustrated; you know the drill. But my ten-year old has not graduated from this tradition so off we went to the store to buy what we needed. We always buy a gingerbread house kit from somewhere like Costco and then we do one from scratch with make our own icing, loads of candy and graham crackers.
The first year we started this tradition, it was a disaster. The icing I made would not stick to anything. The entire house fell apart each time we tried. That is when we started getting the kit as well just to have some insurance in case our homemade one didn’t work out.
Over the years, I have learned a lot of parenting tips and hacks. Including how to make the best and easiest 3-ingredient icing that will dry like glue.
You will need:
• 3 large egg whites (I buy the egg whites in a carton)
• ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
• 4 cups powdered sugar
2 easy steps to make the icing:
• In the bowl of a mixer with whisk attachment, beat together egg whites and cream of tartar
• Beat for about a minute until foamy
• Beat in the 4 cups of powdered sugar (slowly)
You can then put into piping bags (make your own using ziplock bags!) and off you go.
Farewell to tears over a wall that came crashing down and hello to a fun tradition this season!
