Today’s ornament is a fun one.
Have you heard of Washi Tape? It’s basically paper tape that originated in Japan (Wa = Japanese and Shi = paper). I fell in love with these tapes and I use them for all kinds of crafts. My family says I have a slight washi addiction. Here is just part of my stash:
You’ll need washi tape for today’s project so now you have an excuse to go and buy some (or, like me, you can use up some of your collection!).
Washi Tape Tree Ornaments (or Gift Tags!)
Materials:
- Cardstock
- Star or snowflake stickers
- Washi tape
- Scissors
- Small hole punch
- String
Cut your cardstock into the sizes you’d like for your ornaments (3 x 5” index cards would work well also).
Make a simple tree pattern by folding a piece of your cut paper in half and cutting a triangle with a trunk. Set aside.
On a piece of your cardstock, put down washi tape (leaving a space on top for your tree topper sticker). Continue laying down washi tape until you’re down to where the trunk should go (use your pattern as a guide). Use a piece of brown washi for the trunk or simply color in the bottom with a brown marker. Place your tree topper sticker on top, overlapping the top piece of tape a bit.
Lay your pattern down over the top and cut around it.
Punch a hole and thread your string through the top.
These would be cute gift tags as well. You could write your “to” and “from” on the back. Or, turn them into cards for your loved ones!
Let your kids practice with repeating patterns of tape or use the same tape all the way down. Change up the colors or cut the cardstock into other shapes (stars would be cute).
Most of all, have fun!
