You ask your kids to do something simple… like “put your shoes away.” It’s not painful. Takes only a couple seconds, so why the rebellious push-back where they ignore you or do the exact opposite of what you asked? That moment where they get a rebellious look, and you know “it’s on.”
I’m a special needs mom, but I think it’s pretty much the same with all kids. They hate not having options, and they don’t know how to express that, so they act out.

Here’s the really weird part. I do the same thing. This month my schedule got overloaded, and I didn’t say “no”… what I did do was eat too much. I watched myself go for food when I wasn’t hungry… stuffing it in trying to fix something. I call it “angry eating.” It’s no different than a toddler tossing her shoes in the living room. It’s saying “enough.” I’ve got things I can’t express. So maybe when I eat the wrong foods, it’s my way of saying NO to all the things that press in on me. Have you ever felt like this?
I gained four pounds that week. I’ve lost 35 pounds with 3010 Weight Loss for Life, and my first thought was, I’ve wrecked this!!! I need to do something crazy to get back right. When I went in to talk with my 3010 coach, I loved what she said. This isn’t extreme. You can get this back. You aren’t out of control. And she was right. That day, my coach helped me put a plan in place which helped me get back on track for healthy eating.
So now, I’ve had a few weeks of doing what I know works, eating the way they taught me, and I’m feeling more like myself. Saying NO when I need to. Mom was right, “Use your words.”
Oh… and put away your shoes.
