I have a confession…I had never heard of Juneteenth until today. Because of that when I started to see everything posted on social media, I decided to look into it a bit more. I am so glad I did and now understand what this day is. In case you had no idea either, here is a short explanation.
Today is Juneteenth…a day set aside to celebrate progress in the pursuit of freedom from slavery. If you aren’t familiar with Juneteenth, you can find out more in the video below. It is a day of remembrance and the date when Major General Gordon Granger and Union Troops reached Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865 with news of the Civil War’s end. Taking place 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, it represented the end of slavery in the United States.
What a tremendous day to celebrate!
