Teenagers get a bad rap. They’re too often characterized as sullen, hateful, sassy, angst-filled, selfish jerks. And don’t get me wrong, they can be. But so can I. Can’t we all, sometimes? But let me tell you, the teenaged, older siblings of working parents have been the unsung Heroes Of Quarantine.
We have four kiddos that span ten years. Our youngest is 4, our oldest is 14 and we have two 12 year olds in there too. When school was dismissed several weeks ago, we made the decision to keep the youngest home from daycare to limit germs. Since my husband and I were able to keep working, this left the 14 year old as the one in charge. And. She. Rocked. It.
Her daily duties included, but were not limited to: referee (the 12 year old boys can be rather….rambunctious), cook, teacher, and housekeeper. On top of all that, she had her own homework to attend to. Admittedly, it was a big burden to carry and we felt guilty to expect it. But in these weird times, options have been limited.
I can’t tell you how incredible our teenager has been. She is a rock steady helper and I know she isn’t alone. I’m sure there are lots of families out there who had to make difficult decisions over the last few weeks. I’m certain there are lots of teens out there who have stepped up and helped out. I know firsthand that all teens aren’t (always) selfish, hateful jerks. And I’m feeling pretty good about this next generation.
