When we first moved into our house we had a lot of evidence of rats in our attic and crawl space, but inside the house too. There was a lot of disinfecting going on let me tell ya. No one wants to find a rodent in their house. Eeeeew! However, if you do find one, here are a few tips to help you get rid of them once and for all.

- Avoid poison. You can’t control where the rat ends up and if it ends up somewhere that you can’t access you may have a nasty smell on your hands for awhile. I can tell you from personal experience this happened to us and it was not pleasant for several weeks.
- Use traps. Instead of peanut butter on the traps try jelly, chocolate syrup or ketchup. While peanut butter is the longest lasting, if there are any chances of allergies in your house, this could be dangerous.
- Fill access points where rodents are getting in so they can’t get in again. This can be time consuming but so worth it. Crawl Pros can do this for you and they will spend the time to get each access point sealed up. Remember they can get in surprisingly small holes.
- Don’t keep piles of clutter by your house. Rats love hanging out in clutter which mine mean piles of stuff you’ve stacked along the house, wood piles, or thick plants. Keep things as clutter free as you can!
- Be careful when feeding birds. Don’t put out too much food at once or you may attract the rats. Rats aren’t picky eaters and will go where the food is found.
