O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. Psalm 8:1,3-5 (NLT)
When King David wrote these words, he was looking around in awe at creation and said, “Wow, God, you are excellent!” Then, right on the heels of this came the realization that this majestic, excellent God chose to create man just a little lower than Himself, and to crown him with glory and honor. This is YOU! Everything God made is excellent, and this means you are a part of that excellence. YOU were designed by God to excel in every aspect of your life.
Being excellent doesn’t mean you have the perfect house or car, or that you’ve achieved a certain level of monetary success, or even that all your socks are expertly folded according to color in your drawer. Excellence is an attitude, a way of thinking and believing, that causes you to rise above the negative challenges and pressures that assault you on a daily basis. Instead of having a pity party or reacting in anger, an excellent person decides to rise above the circumstance, chooses to walk in joy anyway, and does what is needed to be done.
Excellence is getting the Word of God so deeply in your heart and mind that when you meet up with an issue, you respond like Jesus would respond, not how a victim would respond. When the bankruptcy comes, excellence says, “God will help us rebuild and overcome.” When the doctor gives a bad report, excellence says, “I believe I am healed and I will walk through this with God’s abundant strength.” Don’t get me wrong, being excellent doesn’t mean you won’t feel the blow of intense emotions sometimes… but, it does mean you don’t allow yourself to wallow in them. An excellent person feels the pain and then takes it to God. Through prayer and relationship, an excellent person chooses to move forward.
